Changes to PMP Examination in 2011

The Project Management Institute (PMI), that awards the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, is changing the content of the PMP certification examination in year 2011. The content will approximately change by 30%. All PMP certification examination taken on or after 31st August,2011 will be based on the new content.

The changes are happening to ensure that the PMP certification examination content is in sync with the current role of a Project Manager. Such changes are done by PMI once in 4-7 years timeframe to ensure the credential reflects the true nature of the project management practise. PMI conducted a detailed study with about 3000 PMP certified project managers all over the world between 2009-2010 to arrive at these changes.

Some important points to note:

1. There is no change to the PMBOK Guide itself. People should continue to refer to “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge—Fourth Edition (2008)” until a new PMBOK® Guide is released (sometime in 2012 or so).

2. There is no impact to existing PMP credential holders

3. There is no change in the eligibility or the application process.

4. There is no change to the passing score

5. The change is in the PMP examination content, which is expected to be about 30% different than the current one

Given the changes, it is advised that those who intend to take the PMP exam in the near future should either take the exam based on the current content well ahead of Aug 31st date OR prepare themselves based on the revised content structure and take the new PMP exam after Aug 31st.
